Saloons, cafes and other places in small towns and the countryside which offer tasty dishes made of local products and on the basis of traditional Latvian recipes – ones which differ from region to region.

  • Special programmes are offered to visitors, with meals, stories about holiday and everyday traditions, and songs. Sometimes visitors are involved in preparing the food.
  • Menus use local names for dishes along with explanations and a discussion of the local dialect.
  • Providers of Latvian foods also use ethnographic styles for interior design, as well as dishes, furniture, textiles, etc., from local craftspeople.

The “Rositten” café

The café is alongside the Rēzekne castle hill and the “Zeimuļs” creative services centre of Eastern Latvia (built in September 2012). A lovely interior design and a look at historical objects form Rēzekne are part of the café. It is named after the Rositten fortress that was built here by the master of the Livonian Order in the 13th century. Meals are offered throughout the day, and various foods and baked goods are for sale.

The “Silva” bistro, bakery and café

The bistro is in the centre of Jelgava and offers fresh canapés, cakes, pierogi, cookies and other baked goods. It works with local producers of ingredients.

Latvian cuisine: Bacon pierogi, potato pancakes, wheat-potato porridge with bacon sauce, whipped fool with milk. Grey peas with bacon during the season of the Winter Solstice.

Special foods: The “Duke’s Sail” – oven-roasted pork with caramelised sauerkraut, roast vegetables, lingonberry sauce and horseradish.

The “Aglonas Cakuli” guesthouse

The guesthouse is on the shore of Lake Ciritis with a view of lake islands.  Guests are offered Lettigalian dishes, including ones made from lake fish.
Latvian cuisine: Fish soup, smoked eel and pike-perch, stuffed chicken, potato pancakes with cottage cheese and dill, bread soup with whipped cream or ice cream, whipped cranberry dessert, fried ice cream, freshly squeezed apple juice.

The “Daugava” cafeteria

The cafeteria is in the centre of Krāslava next to A6 highway. It has been recognized as one of the environment friendly enterprises in Latvia. Contact the cafeteria in advance to be served Lettigalian dishes in clay dishes.  The cafeteria also has a bakery.

The “Zala sala” guesthouse

The guesthouse is on the side of the Rēzekne ring road (A12). The lady of the house offers Lettigalian dishes based on local ingredients, and she works with local farmers and fishermen.
Latvian cuisine: Farmer’s breakfast, stacked rye bread with herring, rye bread with sprats, potatoes with chanterelle sauce, blackberry soup with dumplings, baked applies, rhubarb dessert.

Araisi windmill

The windmill is on a hill and offers a lovely view. This is one of the few Dutch-type windmills (built in 1852) to still be in operational order, and guests can help to grind grain. On the last Sunday of every July, the windmill organises a celebration in honour of St Jacob and of bread baked from freshly harvested rye.

Latvian cuisine: Miller’s lunch – wheat flour porridge with meat sauce, crepes, kefir, herbal teas.
