June 11, 2010 Study tour
8:30 | Breakfast at the guest house Dzintarkrasts |
9:30 | Departure for the Kolka village in the Slītere national park from the guest house Dzintarkrasts |
The village is a former restricted military area, a part of the Slītere national park and a Natura 2000 site. The POLPROP project initiated active partnership between the local community and administration of the national park. 9 different tourism products (itineraries and guided tours) are developed – walking, cycling, driving, boating, bird and animal watching. The new tourism products will be presented to general public on June 12, 2010 with the festival “The Slītere travellers’day”. The tour will give an insight into the military background of the area, the nature protection issues and development of sustainable tourism products in the Slītere national park. |
The White Dune nature trail.A wooden pathway moves along the steep shores of the lower part of the Pilsupe river, leading to the White Dune. The dune dates back to the Litorine sea which was formed several thousand years ago. Remains of a Stone Age settlement have been found in the area. |

Kolkasrags (The Kolka cape) is the most distinct cape along the Latvian seashore, and it is the place where the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Rīga come together. Other points of interest include a wrecked ship, a rock marking the centre of Europe, and a former Soviet military base which is used today by the Latvian Coast Guard and which can be viewed only from the outside. During spring migration, there are lots of birds at Kolkasrags, and this is of interest to bird watchers. There is a convenient car park, benches with tables, a visitor centre, and during the summer season, a small cafe.
The former military guard post. Today it seems unbelievable that just 20 years ago there were buildings on the coastline with massive projectors that were rolled onto a platform at night so as to shed light on the nearby sea and beach and to look for potential violators of the border regime. Only the buildings and the ruins of the platform are still there – they have been seriously damaged by the waves of the sea.
Lunch in the Pītagi guest house at Košrags – one of the old Liv fishermen villages with traditional architecture. Only few people live here all year round, the place gets alive in the summertime.
The Pēterezers nature trail is one of the most scenic nature trails in the North Kurzeme with unique landscapes. Wooden trails and stairs lead through the marsh along lakes and in ravines, along the former narrow gauge railway. The trail is 3,5km long, good walking shoes recommendable as in some places in might be wet.
Lily garden. The largest lily selection garden in Eastern Europe, with more than 2,000 kinds of lilies and hybrids. Tasting of locally made wines from unusual substances - birch saps, cranberries, rhubarbs, lilac and other unbelievable things. |
19:00 | Return to Riga |
