Agricultural tourism farms

The farm produces hemp from which it produces hemp butter, roughly ground seeds, as well as hemp oil. The granary, which is 101 years old, features antique instruments once used to process hemp fibres. Visitors can taste and purchase delicious products and take an exciting tour which speaks to the history of hemp farming.

An integrated and biological farm with extensive production of hemp for smooth and rough hemp butter.  Self-grown and certified grass seeds, including annual ryegrass, pasture ryegrass, hybrid ryegrass, meadow fescue, timothy-grass and red clover. Farm with 222 ha of land, including a 70 ha of grain fields, a 2 ha of potato fields, 30 ha of grassland, 10 ha of hemp, 100 ha - other cultures.

Tourists can learn about the history of the estate and the brewing of beer, beginning with raw materials and ending with finished products. The visit is enriched by tastings of live beer and stories about Latvia’s traditional holiday beverage. Alongside the brewery is a store which sells live beer, homemade goodies and selected souvenirs.

The “Valmiermuižas alus virtuve” saloon popularises Latvian beers and uses beer in various dishes. A modern approach to homemade products is used to prepare foods and beer-based snacks. There is a beer garden during the summer, and the saloon merges traditional things with modern ones.

Latvian cuisine: Smoked pork, filet of pike from Lake Burtnieks, green pea mash, with loganberries, quince, pumpkin birch juice and mushroom sauce as accompaniments.

Brewing of beer and non-alcoholic beverages. In 2014 1.86 million liters of beer were produced. In 2014, Valmiermuižas Alus earned revenues of EUR 3.39 million, or 36% more than in 2013.  The company sold 1.86 million litres of beer, or 27.3% more than the year before.  Approximately 1% of the output was exported to Estonia.  With support from the Rural Support Service, Valmiermuižas Alus invested EUR 1.1 million in development to produce porter beer, non-alcoholic sparkling beverages from Latvian fruits and berries, as well as kvass. 

Beginning in late August, you can pick and taste your own sea buckthorn berries and purchase healthy juices made from them. Between late April and early June, you can tour a collection of tulips (more than 200 different types) and purchase their bulbs.

An integrated farm with 8 hectares of land, producing 6-12 tonnes of sea buckthorn each year. Prepares juices and jams.  The farm is also one of Latvia’s largest producers of tulips – some 400 types in all.

The Pīlādži farm is in the Durbe Parish of the Durbe Administrative District.  It is primarily a grain farm, but also breeds livestock and grows flowers and vegetables.

Intensive farming with 500 ha for grain, 350 ha for rapeseed, 20 ha for potatoes, 30 ha for grasses, 0.1 ha for vegetables, with annual output of 1,500 t of grains, 700 t of rapeseed, 500 t of potatoes and 4 t of vegetables.  One dairy cow, 4 head of beef cattle.

The farm breeds more than 150 sheep. There is a location to feed lambs, and the owners organise animal auctions and “Sheep Days” events. You can take a tour of the farm and purchase pedigreed sheep and sheep-related products.

Biological farming. The farm specialises in sheep breeding, breeding animals: 20-200. Farm with 200 ha of land.

The farm grows peas, grits and beans, and it breeds cattle. Visitors can take a tour to learn about biodynamic agricultural techniques.

The Strauti farm is on the eastern edge of hillocks in Embūte.  The southern edge of the farm neighbours large forests with many wild animals.  Alongside is a former fowl farm.  The farm breeds rabbits, sheep, fowl, two horses and a pony.  It has a herd of cows, including Latvian Blue cows.  The farm offers tours for schoolchildren and others.  Contact the farm in advance to purchase rabbit meat, wool and vegetables.  The farm is biological.

Biological farming, 20 ha for grain, 30 ha for grasses and fallow land, 0.7 ha for potatoes, with annual output of 40 t of grain, 10 t of potatoes, 14 cattle, 12 calves, 17 pigs, 140 sheep.

The Vilciņi farm is one of the largest and most modern agricultural manufacturing companies in Zemgale, always using environmentally friendly methods.  The farm is in the Krimūni Parish in the heart of the historical region of Zemgale.  It was established in 1991 by the parents of the current owner, Arnis Burmistrs.  Today the farm specialises in grain farming on ~2,200 ha of land.  The farm uses precise agricultural methods to save money and preserve the environment and human health.  It is actively involved in EU-financed projects, has a modern set of agricultural equipment, and has installed a local meteorological facility.  Tours are available.

Intensive farming, 1,630 ha for grain, 336 ha for rapeseed, 150 ha for beans, with annual output of 9,780 t of grain, 1,176 t of rapeseed and 600 t of beans. The farm uses precise farming methods based on regular analysis of the soil.  Modern computer software is linked to each specific area of land in this process.

Latvian blackhead sheep are in a clean environment at the Ances farm, which is in the Northern Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve near the border with Estonia.  It is in the Naukšēni Parish, where chemical plant protection substances and mineral fertilisers have never been used intensively.  The sheep roam freely during the winter and summer, with fencing to protect them against wolves and wild boar.  The farm only uses female sheep born as twins or triplets, including animals for genetic resources.  All of the sheep come from German blackhead sheep and are only mated with high-quality LT rams in January, February, August and September.

Specialising in sheep farming (Latvian dark-headed sheep), with ~100 ewes. 70 ha of land. 40 ha for grasses. The farm sells breeding rams and sheep, as well as sheepskin, yarn, blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, woven goods and milk-fed lamb.

Mežvidi (SIA Latgale Vegetable Logistics) began operations in 2007 and sells tasty and healthy red tomatoes.  The owners plan to grow and deliver tomatoes during the winter, when people have the greatest need for healthy and vitamin-rich vegetables.  The farm helps to facilitate co-operation among people who farm vegetables, and it informs the public about how tomatoes are grown.

Growing tomatoes in hothouses. Produces more than 140 tonnes of tomatoes in each season. Tomatoes on the vine can be bought at Latvia’s leading stores during the winter thanks to a biomass cogeneration plant that provides energy to heat the greenhouses.  The farm produces 100% tomato juice from fresh tomatoes.

This farm is in a lovely location on the western side of the Talsi hillocks, offering a look at Talsi and its area.  This is an open farm with grows and processes apples (dried apples, apple chips, apple juice).  Visitors are offered an informative tour, with a chance to taste and purchase the products.  The farm is in a protected natural area -- the Talsi Hillocks Nature Park.  There is an area for tenting during the summer.  The owners will teach you to produce a crown from fruit tree branches.  It also breeds escargot.  The gardens of the farm stretch across the hillocks, and there are several types of local apple trees that are nurtured by the lady of the house.  An informative stand alongside the farm features information about the most important values of the nature park.

An integrated farm with 24 ha of land, including a 2.5 ha apple orchard. Each year the farm produces 30 tonnes of apples and produces apple chips, dried apples, apple juice, etc.  It also grows Burgundy snails and can teach visitors how to shape a crown for fruit trees.

The Lācīši farm can be found in the Galgauska Parish to the Southwest of Gulbene.  One of the largest farms in Northeastern Vidzeme, it specialises in grain farming (577 ha), rapeseed farming (295 ha), and various grasses.  It is also a dairy farm with some 100 cows to produce meat and breed calves.  There is an interesting room for meetings and presentations, with large glass windows opening up to the cattle barn.  The farm actively makes use of EU funding.  Contact the farm in advance for tours and exchanges of experiences.

577 ha from grain, 295 ha for rapeseed, 299 ha for grasses, with annual output of 1,400 t of grain, 200 t of rapeseed, 25 t of grasses.  100 dairy cows (200 t of output a year), 30 head of beef cattle and 140 calves.

The Iesalnieki-1 farm is in the Vietalva Parish in the Pļaviņas Administrative District.  It grows rapeseed, barley, wheat and grasses on 180 ha of land.  The farm is run by two brothers who manage more than 800 ha of land in all.

Intensive farming, with 30 ha for grain, 100 ha for rapeseed, 50 ha for grasses, with annual output of 100 t of grain and 220 t of rapeseed.

This is a beautiful farm that is friendly to the environment and has some 300 hives of bees. There is a shop along with a tasting hall where you can enjoy honey made of various flowers, pollen (including pollen in honey), propolis (also in honey) bee bread, wax and souvenirs. Taste beekeeping products (including honey wine) and take a tour of the farm, as well.

This farm uses traditional hives to extract honey, and it offers a look at hives that were used in the past. The owners are happy to talk about the development of beekeeping in Latvia and their experience in this regard.

The farm specialises in beekeeping and has ~200 swarms of bees. Output of 10 tonnes of honey a year. Average output is around 60 kg of honey per hive.

One of the largest meat and dairy farms in Kurzeme, with a herd of around 500 heads of cattle. The farm also breeds most of the types of fowl that are known in Latvia. An informative tour is available, and you can purchase meat, milk and eggs.

A biological farm with 400 ha of grain fields.  Output of 1,200 tonnes a year, as well as 20 tonnes of potatoes from 1 ha, 10 tonnes of vegetables from 0.5 ha, 1,300 tonnes of milk, 150 tonnes of beef, 50 tonnes of veal, 3 tonnes of pork and 2 tonnes of mutton.

The Sutru Berry Garden is in the Sutru Parish in the Līvāni Administrative District.  It grows blackberries in tunnels, which means that the berries ripen far more quickly than elsewhere in Latvia.  You can purchase berries on site.

3 ha for strawberries, blackberries and raspberries, 15 t of output a year.

The Rožlejas farm is in the Džūkste Parish of the Tukums Administrative District, where the Eastern Courlandian highlands interact with the Heath lowlands.  The parents of the current owner, Jānis Ukše, began work there in 1989, establishing a natural farm to grow sugar beets and then also wheat.  Thanks to thoughtful farming, Rožlejas has, over the past quarter-century, turned into one of the largest grain farms in Western Latvia.  The owners have taken active part in EU projects to purchase modern equipment and to build hangars for the storage of grain and equipment.  The farm specialises in winter barley and winter wheat, using ~1,200 ha of land for that purpose.

Cīņai pret kaitēkļiem tiek izmantotas spožlapsenes un plēsējērces. Tas nodrošina, ka SIA Getliņi EKO siltumnīcā saražotā produkcija ir veselīga un garšīga. Tomātu raža tiek novākta 2 reizes nedēļā. (kopā nedēļā ~ 15 tonnas tomātu).

The farm breeds purebred and crossbred cattle for seed, fattening and meat production.  It sells piglets and pork, grows grains and potatoes, and engages in beekeeping.  Six ponds are used to breed carp, tench and orfe.  During the winter, fishing is possible in special basins that are based on the flooding of a curve in the Bērzene River.  Valti offers a look at biological farming, beef cattle breeding, genetic work related to purebred animals, and fishing outdoors.  The farm has a special seminar room and kitchen for seminars and training.  The farm maintains the Oskars Kalpaks trail, which crosses a territory that is geological and landscape interest.

The owner of the Vālodzes farm is a beekeeper.  The farm is on the banks of a lovely river in a place where a homestead existed long ago.  The hive are on a hillock and in a lovely meadow in the forest.  Alongside the bees is a lovely apple orchard, and the owner is happy to have help in harvesting the apples in the fall.  He has slowly restored the farm since 1996, and it has a lovely and large lake, a lake hut, a granary with a renovated upper floor and balcony, the beekeeping operation and the apple orchard.
